The portrait of Dorian Gray - - Chapter 7 : Alan Compbell

T he next mornin g, Dori an wrote two lette rs: one to Al an
Campbell at 152, Hertford Street, which he as ked hi s butl er,
Victor, to deli ve r , and one which he kept in his coat pocket.
He remembered how Basil had looked the ni ght befo re
when he had left him in the room upsta irs. His head had
fallen fo rward as if he was sleepin g and there was a pool of
blood at his feet on the Ooor. Dorian erased the memory
fi·om his mind. He did n't want to think of unpleasant thi ngs.
Alan Campbell was once a very good fri end of Dori an's.
T hey had met at a party. Alan \vas a chemist bu t he played
the pi a no ve ry vve ll , and his interest in music attracted
Dorian. T hey wen t to the opera together and Alan thought,
like many oth ers, that Dorian was a wonder ful man who
always did exciting thin gs. T hen, one day, they stopped
seei ng each oth er. No one knew why, bu t they noticed th at
Alan always left the room when Dori an en tered . Alan became
sad and dep ressed. He stopped playing music and going to
parties, and he spent most of his time alone in his laborato ry
doing experime nts.
T he door to Dori an's li brar y opened , and Victor en tered .
"Mr AJan Campbell , sir."
Alan Campbell had a very serious look on his face , and he
did not look very health y. His black hair a nd eyes made his
face look even more whi te.
"AJan! T hank you for coming."
"You know I never wa nted to see you again , Gray."
"Sit clown, Alan. I have something importa nt I wan t to te ll
you."
Campbell sat clown, and Dorian watched his face as he
told hi m what he had clone to Bas il.
"Good God , Dorian! You've murdered someo ne? I don't
want to kn ow anything more. I'm leaving."
Alan got up to go.
""Wait! Alan, you must help me. You know what che micals
to use to get rid of the body."
"And what ma kes you think I will help yo u?"
Dorian went to his desk and wrote something clown on a
piece of paper. He gave Alan the paper. After Alan had read
it, he looked ill. He sat down.
''I've wri tten the letter. Look at th e address. If I send it,
you know what will happen to yo u. "
Dorian showed Al an the lette r he had hidden in his
pocket. T here was some secret in it that Alan did not want
a nyone to know.
Dorian Gray's butler went to Alan Campbell's house and
picked up all of the things Alan would need to get rid of the
bod y. It took Alan several hours to fini sh, but when he was
gone, Dorian saw that Basil 's dead body was gone, too. T he
room was clea n, bu t there was a horribl e smell of che micals
in th e air. Dori an looked at his por tra it ha ngin g on the wall ,
and he almost fell over in shock whe n he saw that the hand
in the picture was covered with reel blood .
